wonafight[ Steve knows what it’s like to have your life turned upside down knowing that there’s more to Hawkins than meets the eye. He remembers going through his dad’s supply of beer in the garage just so he could sleep through the night. If he hadn’t been with Nancy at the time and wasn’t trying to keep up some kind of normalcy for both of them, he probably would’ve drunk even more just to deal with feeling like he was going crazy. Like they were all going crazy and had just experienced some mass hallucination.
Nancy had been his saving grace back then. It was a while before they got back together, but considering the things he’d done and said, he didn’t blame her for not immediately forgiving him. But even before they were dating again, when he felt like he was going off the deep end and losing his mind, she was there to talk to. To confirm that she had seen what he’d seen. Her countenance was so much more serious than it had been before. Before Barbara. Before the Demogorgon. Something fundamental had changed, he knew that, just as he knew something in him had changed also. As much as he wanted to pretend like none of it had happened, it had and there was no going back to normal.
And then there had been the demodogs, and the Russians and Vecna. And it all got worse and worse, but somehow easier to deal with knowing that he wasn’t alone. As much as he hated that more and more people were having their idea of normal shattered, never to be put back together again, he was grateful that they had each other to lean on. He couldn’t imagine going through it alone and he’d made sure that Robin had someone there when she couldn’t sleep, or felt like she was going crazy, or had a sudden but understandable fear of elevators.
So when Chrissy and Eddie become the newest members of their Party, Steve makes sure that they know they aren’t alone in this. Eddie and his uncle are holing up at a local motel until they can figure out where to live now that their trailer is destroyed. Steve offers to let them stay at his house, since he has the empty bedrooms, and is surprised when Eddie agrees. It’s a little awkward at first, but it’s not long before they fall into a comfortable routine. Most nights they end up smoking and talking into the middle of the night by the pool. Steve finds himself looking forward to these quiet moments at the end of the day.
He gives Chrissy his number and tells her to call him any time she wants to talk or go for a drive. He doesn’t know much about why Vecna targeted her, but he recognizes that her home life isn’t the best. She tells her that she’s welcome to come to his house if she needs to get away and hopes that she trusts him enough to know that he’s not the guy he used to be when she was a sophomore on the JV Cheer squad. He goes to the games, mainly to support Lucas who refuses to let a bunch of assholes ruin sports for him, and he hangs around afterwards to check in on Chrissy and, if she’ll let him, drive her home.
It’s not long before he’s driving her back to his place first to hang out with him and Eddie for a few hours before taking her home. If he sometimes stretches the truth and tells her that Eddie needs cheering up, or tells Eddie that Chrissy is stressed out and needs someone to make her laugh, he thinks that he’ll be forgiven in the long run. Things feel the most normal when they’re all together. When a Friday night suddenly means a movie, a pizza and a six pack. Tonight was Chrissy’s turn to pick the movie and since Robin had checked her out, Steve has no idea what they are in for.
He pushes the tape into the VHS player and waits for the screen to come to life. ] Okay, ladies’ shoice. Hopefully, Eddie will be more forgiving than he was with my pick last week.
[ He’s still getting made fun of for picking Top Gun. Steve looks at the two of them sitting side by side on the couch. ] Do either of you need anything? I’m going to get another beer.
